PPP to pursue reconciliation: Zardari
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) believes in dialogue and reconciliation and will continue to pursue the same, PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said on Thursday, while speaking at a reception hosted by Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo in Islamabad.
“It is time for dialogue. But this does not mean we have accepted the status quo. Dialogue is the only way to take the country out of its current grave situation,” he said. The forthcoming budget will be pro-poor and business-friendly, he added.
Zardari said he hoped that the country would soon come out of the prevailing crises and would continue its journey towards democracy.
He said that all government decisions would reflect the consent of parliament, which he said would be made more powerful. He said the National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies, through their unanimous resolutions, had demanded a United Nations-led investigation into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
He said the Government of Pakistan was sending a formal request to the UN in this regard.
In agreement: Zardari said his party was in agreement with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on seat-to-seat adjustment for the June 26 by-elections.
Meanwhile, former PML-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo formally joined the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Thursday along with his daughter Robina Wattoo.
Wattoo contested the 2008 elections as an independent and won two National Assembly (NA) seats. His daughter also ran as an independent and won a Punjab Assembly seat. Wattoo has now fielded his son, Khurrum Wattoo, in the by-polls for the NA seat he vacated.
Zardari declared PPP’s support for Wattoo’s son. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, Water and Power Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf and PPP Secretary General Jehangir Badar also attended the reception. staff report/agencies
